where to study Mandarin in China?

Hi,

I am considering to go work in China. So, I am thinking to go there to learn the language rather than take courses here at Dawson or one of the Universities.

Can someone recommend a good school in Beijing to study Mandarin? Also, what period of time is necessary to become reasonably fluent? I was thinking 6 months or 1 year?

Thanks.

You should also keep in mind that pronunciation varies widely across China and in many places various dialects are still in use. The place you are looking for brings to mind southern or southwestern China.

If you want to immerse yourself in a pure Chinese-speaking environment, you’ll need to go to a second-tier city to study Chinese as people there usually only understand a few words of English, which means you’ll have to force yourself to communicate with the local people in Chinese. However, people from small cities are not as open-minded as people from Beijing or Shanghai, so you might find it difficult to integrate yourself into the local society due to cultural differences.
